Casting is under way for “A Christmas Story Too” — not the FunnyOrDie.com comedy video, but a genuine feature film follow-up to the beloved classic, to be directed by Brian Levant (“Beethoven,” “Are We There Yet?” “Jingle All the Way,” etc.). They’re looking for Ralphie, now a teenager (legal 18 to play 16), Dad, now fiftysomething; fortysomething Mom, plus brother Randy (now 11) and teen pals including Schwartz. The story will again focus on Ralphie yearning for a special Christmas present, but this time it’s a 1938 Hupmobile Skyline convertible. Sweet! Unfortunately, he takes one on a test drive and manages to ruin the convertible top, leading to a mad scramble to try to make enough money to repair the roof.

You cannot recreate a classic. I have seen the films Brian Levant has directed. Not impressed. Doubt myself or my family will see this. And I am a HUGE fan. Have been to the Christmas Story house. Own the movie. Watch it year round. Just not worth it to me.

Hopefully it will be better than the 1994 Jean Sheppard sequel….It Runs in the Family (released on DVD as My Summer Story); that was really bad, like Caddy Shack II bad!

This is a BAD idea hollywood seriously. A Christmas Story is the GREATEST Christmas movie ever. It was PURE magic. An original story by a guy who was a genious. It was at a time of childhood innocence when “ALL was right with the world.” And now hollywood wants to try an destroy that. What a shame……

I read through the scene where Mr. & Mrs. Parker are ice fishing, and it doesn’t have the same feel at all. They’re flat out arguing, not just bickering.
The scene where the boys (Ralphie, Flick & Schwartz) are copying homework seems like it would fit in with the original.
I don’t know… some movies you just can’t touch. A Christmas Story seems like one of them.

Yeah … that’s nice, but actually the film already has a sequel. 1994′s “It Runs in the Family” (also titled “My Summer Story” which is the better title in my opinion, more clearly tying it to the original). The characters are played by other people but it’s still the same characters and the format is basically the same, with the narrative.
Still happy to hear it will have a 2nd sequel though!

Who’s written the script? Who’s directing? I hope that they have the good taste to use locations with the flavor of our original film. Apart from starting where JS grew up, in Gary IN, we scanned the “rust belt” carefully for the exteriors that captured the texture of neighborhood streets, schools, and did the best we could afford to capture the optimism of that time. Higbees was a huge challenge for a low budget movie.

Ralph as a teenager? I think that was called “Ollie Hopnoodle’s Haven of Bliss” which i’m STILL waiting for to be released to DVD.. that is, if PBS and Disney can agree to distribute to dvd.

The movie that A Christmas Story was based on covers Ralphie as a teenager. It was a low budjet PBS movie also narrated by Jean Shepherd. Phantom of The Open Hearth. This has been done already. Hope this new one does not destroy the original’s popularity. Don’t think this will work.

Who will write it and narrate it? Shepherd always wrote or co-wrote the movie and TV screenplays and did his own narration. This does not sound good. I can only hope that the new film will be handled by Fatheads, ie, people who “got” Shepherd and will stay faithful to his ironic style, with a minimum of non-Shepherdian material. In short, I hope it’s not just another dumb holiday comedy, with a cast of idiots who are just pulling in a paycheck without knowing the back history of the characters they are playing.
