Willow’s ‘Whip My Hair’ Success — Jada Saw it Coming

Willow Smith 'Whip My Hair' cover

Talk about bursting into stardom!  With Willow Smith’s catchy “Whip My Hair” video burning up the internet this week, it’s safe to say mama Jada Pinkett Smith saw it coming.

Back at the beginning of summer, she tipped us that Willow had a music project on the way that was really going to be something.

“Willow is explosive, she’s all energy,” Jada explains.  “She’s like her father in that way – very extroverted.  She deals with the public like Will does – but her creative sensibilities are very much like mine.  Very unconventional.”
Indeed.  Willow’s already being hailed as a style maker, what with such eye-catching fashion flourishes as the chrome band she sports around her ear and what look like lip and eyelid piercings.  (No, no, no…..!)  Willow’s radio comment about being interested in working with Lady Gaga has been picked up by outlets all around the world.

You may recall that when the Smiths were in China for the making of son Jaden’s “Karate Kid” film, Willow fell in love with the culture to the extent she took up  Mandarin – and continued learning the language back in Los Angeles so she could speak it better when the family returned to China for the movie’s premiere.

Hard to believe she doesn’t even turn 10 until Halloween

In ‘Toy Story 3’ and in Hollywood, it’s Cool to be Metro to the Max

By Emily-Fortune Feimster

Who’da thunk it?  The Ken doll was actually ahead of his time.  “Toy Story 3,” with Ken voiced by Michael Keaton, confirms what we all intuited long ago — the fact that this doll is… a metrosexual.

In case you hadn’t heard, “metrosexual” is a word to describe a fella who’s proudly concerned with his appearance, from his gelled hairdo to his manicured fingernails. A term first coined in 1994 by British journalist Mark Simpson, the metrosexual male, unlike his scruffy haired, t-shirt wearing counterpart, knows how to moisturize, shop, and behave in public.  He’d rather sip a glass of wine than down a 12-pack of beer.  And like Ken, he revels in having a walk-in closet full of stylish outfits.  It’s a phenomenon that confuses women and affects gaydar.

Just ask Ryan Seacrest, the mother of all metrosexuals.  He always wears fashionable clothes, has frosted hair, and normally a well-groomed 5 o’clock shadow. When asked by Larry King if it’s fair for people to call him a metrosexual, Seacrest responded, “Yes, I’m fine with it. I think it’s cool…I’ve made it no secret that I’ve highlighted my hair, and I’ve just — I’ve done these things that I never knew how to do until, when you start a TV show, you have somebody that helps you with things. I think it’s OK for a man to say, I want to take care of myself and be presentable for a woman in my life.” Riiiight.

Soccer icon David Beckham has been known for getting manicures before every match, changing his hair weekly and loving to shop. In fact, he and his Spice Girl wife Victoria, dubbed “Posh and Becks,” seem to enjoy wearing color coordinated outfits at many public events. Gillette gave Beckham a $50,000 diamond-encrusted razor so he can keep a clean shave at all times. He paints his nails and wears sarongs. He goes to the hair salon to get perfect highlights. What’s more, he doesn’t care if you know that. Among his favorite designers are Gucci, Prada, Diesel and Dolce & Gabbana, not to mention his earning around $1,757,000 for modeling Police sunglasses. He does sport the odd diamond earring worth around $12,300, an $87,850 wedding ring, and a limited edition white-gold Panerai watch.  It’s enough to make Ken jealous.

Always dressed to the nines on the red carpet, Australian actor Hugh Jackman made his mark with American movie audiences as the hairy, scary mutant superhero “Wolverine.” But we saw a different side of the man as the high-spirited, high-stepping Peter Allen in the Broadway show, “The Boy from Oz.” This wasn’t the first production for Jackman, who earned his spurs in musical theater, playing Curly in the West End London production of “Oklahoma.” Despite having an affinity for musical theatre, you definitely know a guy’s a metrosexual when he’s prettier than his wife. He’s married to actress/director Debra Lee Furness, who happens to be eight years older. Also, forget the hamburgers and chicken wings – his favorite food is sushi.

Will Smith started out as a rapper who wore big t-shirts and baggy shorts, but his machismo seems to have fallen down a few notches after making fluffy films like “Hitch” and doing that silly dance in his “Switch” video. Not your typical hip-hop artist, he avoids using profanity and is good to his wife Jada Pinkett Smith.  The two are usually decked out in designer duds, which happen to be color coordinated with each other.

Dave Navarro may be covered in tattoos but he’s no ordinary rocker. After all, how many times do you see guys like Tommy Lee traveling with Louise Vuitton luggage? No stranger to a nail salon, this guy takes more time to get ready than his wife Carmen Electra and even uses way more eyeliner. Not to mention the fact that he was way too into their wedding planning. Nothing’s more entertaining than watching a leather-clad, Satan-esque rocker talking about flower arrangements and making sure the bouquet matches his suit.

P. Diddy  is so concerned with fashion, he inaugurated his own highly-successful line.

Usher is often dressed in unbelievably expensive designer suits, he’s no stranger to wearing dainty gloves, and he’s always seen sporting his diamond stud earrings. He takes enormously good care of his body, doing over 1,000 crunches a day to keep those rock hard abs. He’s even the first to admit that he’s one of the biggest momma’s boys in the business.

The same goes for Justin Timberlake, who called his mom and almost cried the day he got “Punk’d” by Ashton Kutcher.  Though gone are the days of him wearing an all denim suit with a matching hat underneath his neatly gelled, curly hair, this is one guy who is meticulous about his appearance.

Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise are as much models as they are actors, welcoming the female gazes like the walking billboards they’ve become. Their million dollar smiles have made them cultural icons. Both look modernly sleek atop their crotch rocket motorcycles. The picture of how Brad looked at the “Along Came Polly” premiere, where he was wearing a navy blue suit with a matching scarf , stays emblazoned in the mind – it looked very metro. His bottle blonde ‘do was the antithesis of his old skuzzy look.

Though he has more of a Bohemian style, Jude Law is a metrosexual in that he’s more of the sensitive, soft-spoken, artsy type. He’s been into drama since he was a child, having started acting at age 12 with the National Youth Music Theatre. You’re more likely to find this vegetarian/yoga guy at a poetry reading than a boxing match any day.

Which brings us to everyone’s favorite “Dancing With the Stars” ballroom dancing heavyweight boxing champion, Evander Holyfield.

The hit show has surely advanced the metro trend. Joey McIntyre proved his terpsichorean artistry and looked metro hot in his toreador dance outfit. John proudly wore puffy shirts that would have had his old “Seinfeld” cohorts doing double takes while wowing the “Dancing” judges. Hey, having silver hair – especially the gorgeously groomed kind like John’s – doesn’t exclude you from being metro.

You think he gets it that way without a rinse? Come on.

Yes, the “Dancing With the Stars” list of ballroom boys is chockablock with metrosexual hotties – Gilles Marini, Evan Lysacek, Helio Castroneves, to name a few.

Considering all that, Perhaps Mattel ought to give Sugar’s Daddy Ken a rethink.  The pink polo shirt ‘n’ green patterned jacket-clad dolly never made it to market after an internet brouhaha last year, but we think his time has come.

Michael Vartan Talks Taking Romantic Plunge

Michael Vartan TNT photo

Ooh la la! “HawthoRNe” is doing a full court press with l’amour in the season of the TNT show launching Tuesday (6/22). According to Michael Vartan, the romance soon to break out between his and Jada Pinkett Smith’s characters”feels like deep, intense love and passion — messy, dark and powerful.

“There are a lot of emotions running very deep between these characters. There is the obvious workplace conflict. There is all the history they have,” he continues, speaking of his Dr. Tom Wakefield being chief of surgery and Smith’s Christina Hawthorne being head of nursing at the fictional Virginia hospitalwhere the show takes place. Tom, as viewers know, was also the physician whotried in vain to save her late husband’s life.

“You can either go the ‘Moonlighting’ route and keep the characters apart for 17 years until the audience can’t take anymore, which people have come to expect,” Vartan observes, “or you can take a risk and just do it right away. The writers felt that getting these two together romantically would cause so much conflict it would be interesting and good for the show. It really feels like adifferent show this season.”

Will Smith hangs out on the “HawthoRNe” set a lot. What’s it like doing those sexy scenes with Mrs. Smith in that regard? And how about Vartan’s fiancee, Lauren Skaar?

“Oh, she and Jada are totally cool with one another,” he says. “They’ve had their powwow, I guess. It’s part of the business. It’s also television — a lot tamer than features.”

As far as Will, Vartan gushes to such a degree it sounds like bromance time. “I’d like to say we’re best friends, but that would be me exaggerating. He’s a great guy and one of the nicest guys I know — so much nicer than he needs to be, if you know what I mean. I see him around fans, he truly extends himself …I always like to spend time talking to him because I know he’ll say something ridiculous that will make me laugh.”

Vartan tells us that he and his beautiful blond bride-to-be, who works in real estate, have picked April 2, 2011 as their wedding date — even as his legions of female fans are adjusting to the news that the one-time “Alias” hunk is taken. “We’re still looking around for the place,” he says, “but it will definitely be in the Southern California area.”

Jada Pinkett Smith Not Worried About Impact of Stardom on Her Kids

Jada Pinkett Smith

Jada Pinkett Smith isn’t worried about the impact movie stardom is having on her 11-year-old son Jaden, now that he’s the title star of “The Karate Kid,” opening tomorrow (6/11).  Fame, she notes, “has always been a part of his life.  For him, it’s not anything different.  Yes, the focus and attention is on him now, but he’s just like, ‘Okay.’  He’s a very mellow, introverted cat who takes everything in stride.”

Daughter Willow, on the other hand, “is explosive.  She’s all energy.  She’s like her father in that way – very, very extroverted.  They’re both kind of layered with both of our personalities,” she says of herself and husband Will.  “My son is more like me in how he deals with fame, but he’s very much driving with his career, like his father.  Our daughter I would say deals with the public like Will does, but her creative sensibilities are very much like mine, very unconventional.”

The nine-year-old – who has a music project of her own coming out in late summer – latched on to China in a big way when the Smith family was in that land for three months last year while Jaden was shooting “Karate Kid” with Jackie Chan.

“I didn’t expect my daughter wanting to learn Mandarin.  She has continued to learn the language here.  When we go back to China for the premiere there, she asked if her Mandarin teacher could come along, to help her keep up with her new language skills.  We said ‘Absolutely.’  She has so much love for the culture.  That was surprising.”

The Smiths have the Tony Awards to attend Sunday (6/13) – they, along with Beyonce and Jay-Z – are producers on the musical “Fela!” that’s up for 11 awards.  The next day, they head for China and the film’s premiere there.  After that, they’ll be traveling to other points ‘round the globe to help launch the movie.  Jada’s TNT “Hawthorne” series gets its second season premiere June 22.

Jada posed nude for the cover of Essence that’s just coming out.  What does Will think about that?  “Oh, he loves that stuff.  He loved the photos,” she says.

Jada Tells Why Work is Good for Her and Will’s Kids

Jada and Will

The Will Smith family takes off for a three-month stay in China — where 10-year-old son Jaden will star in the remake of  “Karate Kid” —  as soon as mama Jada wraps the first season of her TNT “HawthoRNe”  series next month. Asked if she has if she has any concern about Jaden and his 9-year-old sister Willow pursuing theatrical careers as such an early age, Jada notes, “You don’t have to worry about kids  being spoiled by attention when their father is the biggest movie star in the world.”

She adds that it’s important that her children know what work is, “because they live in abundance.  It’s very easy for youngsters in a privileged lifestyle to have no drive.  We wanted  our children to feel the gratification of hard work.  Will and I developed strong drives at an early age.  He worked in an ice house with his father to help his family survive.  I started work at age 12.   We felt it was important that our children created the same foundations.”

Jada has already proven herself in many movies and with her Wicked Wisdom band, and says she’s now taking on the series in which she’ll play a hospital nursing director because, “I felt I needed the challenge of trying to go into the next phase of my career.” She stresses that the first season of the show is only taking three months of her time, and that it’s being done with the blessings of her family, “Who are with me constantly. Will is on the set all the time and my daughter spent all day with me on the set yesterday.  It’s a project we discussed and agreed was something that would be good for me to do.”
LOOKING GOOD:  While there’s no shortage of beauty among the contestants on TV Land’s “She’s Got the Look” reality show for wannabe models over 35, the beauty that launched host Kim Alexis into a Supermodel is hard to ignore.  She’s gorgeous at 48, but when it comes to the idea of marketing merchandise based on that fact, she laughs.  “I think I’m in research and development.  I find that what I like to do is be the one doing the research, going through the little things as I’m growing older myself so I can be a good voice.”  Alexis, who has run eight marathons, notes, “I try to be encouraging to women when it comes to fitness.”  She also says, “I found a great doctor I enjoy working with; he’s anti-aging.  I’ve been talking to him…maybe I’ll do something down the line.”
Right now, she’s focused on the second season of “She’s Got the Look,” which launches June 11.  She feels strongly that there’s a good take-away for viewers watching the show – “that if you have dreams and desires that haven’t been pursued, you need to go after that to feel better about yourself.”

IN GEAR:  NBC recently announced “Southland” has been renewed for a second season, which is good news for the show’s star Regina King, who tells us she’s really starting to gel with her character.  “I love that she is a detective who is a woman.  She has the vulnerability that all women have, no matter how strong she is.  That’s just part of being a woman – we can’t help but care,” notes King, who is known for being a strong, independent woman herself.  “Lydia is strong but she doesn’t come off like a cyborg.  She expresses emotions but isn’t weak so the combination of the two is great.”
THE INDUSTRY EYE:  Interesting casting challenge for the team behind the upcoming indie film “Chicago 8” – including seven of those charged with inciting a riot and conspiracy relating to the protests that took place outside the 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago:  Jerry Rubin, Devid Dellinger, Tom Hayden, Rennie Davis, John Froines, Lee Weiner and Bobby Seale.  Abbie Hoffman is reportedly already cast.  They’re also going to need actors to portray other real-life characters involved including Judge Julius Offman and Allen Ginsberg.
And there’s a big part ahead for some lucky dog.  Plans are afoot for a “Marmaduke” feature based on the popular comic strip about an oversized but loveable pooch.  Actually, casting forces are interviewing candidates for secondary roles now, including Marmaduke’s master’s boss and Marmaduke’s dog trainer.
