‘Rizzoli & Isles’ Sasha Alexander Savors Family Time on Two Continents

Sasha Alexander is savoring family time while “Rizzoli & Isles” is on its seasonal hiatus — with plans to spend Thanksgiving time here in California with her family, and the Christmas season in Europe with husband Edoardo Ponti and his kin, which includes his mother, Sophia Loren.

“My mom is making Thanksgiving.  She’s a great cook.  She likes to cook alone, so I’m making pumpkin and blueberry pies to bring,” reports the actress, whose hit series returns to the TNT lineup Monday, Nov. 28.

Then it will be off to Switzerland for the Pontis.  Five-year-old Lucia has started to ski, says her proud mom, and baby Leonardo will turn one Dec. 20 — another family celebration.

“I grew up in Los Angeles, and never had snow at Christmas.  The last eight years with my husband, I’ve gone to spend the holidays in Europe and I have to say, it’s grown on me,” says Alexander.  “They indulge Christmas down to every detail.  It’s so beautiful, so relaxing.  I really love it now.  I love to bundle up and go outside in the fresh air.”

Alexander notes that she and fellow “Rizzoli & Isles” star Angie Harmon communicate occasionally when they’re off work.  “But she’s in Charlotte. North Carolina and I’m out here.  She kind of buckles down with the family back East.  We get back into our little family holes between seasons.  We see each other all the time six months of the year.”

According to Alexander, the new episodes that begin airing next week will show a testing of the friendship between Harmon’s police detective Jane Rizzoli and her character, medical examiner Dr. Maura Isles.

“As my executive producer says, these two women are facing real life issues.  They happen to be friends.  Anyone who has friends knows they have disagreements, they don’t always see eye-to-eye.  These two are not fighting over who looks better in a little black dress or over guys.  They’re actually dealing with complicated issues about boundaries or rules.”  Still, Jane’s brother, Tommy (Colin Egglesfield) and his increasingly obvious chemistry with Maura is apparently going to be part of the reason for the clash.
Notes Alexander, “The season ends in kind of a shocking way.  I’m very interested in seeing how the fans respond to it.”

CELEBRITY BITES:  Holly Robinson Peete tells us that she and her family “have a fried turkey every year for Thanksgiving.  Fried turkey’s not for everyone.  We have the fire department on speed dial.”

According to Bill Engvall, his traditional Thanksgiving feast goes like this: “I get up early and start smoking a turkey.  We usually eat around 1:00 and then watch football.”

Julia Louis-Dreyfus says she usually leaves cooking of the main Thanksgiving Day meal to the rest of her family, while she focuses on baking goodies.  “I love to bake.  I have a terrible sweet tooth, and I cook for that tooth.”

Lee Thompson Young Talks ‘Rizzoli & Isles’ Changes

Lee Thompson Young tells us he’s been getting particular enjoyment out of shooting this season of TNT’s hit “Rizzoli & Isles” because, “Everyone’s life is getting filled out, and that’s really interesting to play as an actor.”

He points out, “Obviously Sasha (Alexander) and Angie (Harmon) are fabulous and they will always be the core of the show.  But there are other avenues to explore with the rest of the ensemble, and they’re doing a good job of showing each person’s character.”  He says we’ll see a “deepening and strengthening of the relationships between the people inside the homicide unit” as the season unfurls.  Also, there are “definitely some partner dynamics” ahead between Angie Harmon’s Rizzoli character and her former partner in the homicide detective squad, played by Bruce McGill.  “There’ll be workplace shifts, too.”

Young, who plays Harmon’s current partner, the corpse-averse, technology whiz Det. Barry Frost, tells us he was caught off-gaurd by the way the show became a hit last year.  “And the size of the response we had was a pretty big surprise to all of us.”

The personable actor and USC grad, who was once known as the title tween favorite of the Disney Channel’s “The Famous Jett Jackson,” has been busy elsewhere between “Rizzoli & Isles” camera calls.

‘I did ‘The Good Guys’ on Fox, then an episode of ‘The Event,’  then came back to ‘Rizzoli and Isles,” says Young, whose credits also include the big screen “Friday Night Lights” and “Akeelah and the Bee.”  “It’s nice to mix it up a little bit, and get a fresh perspective every time.  It’s like a palate cleanser.  I like to fight against routine and getting stale.”

Angie Harmon’s New Series a Little Too Much of a Good Thing

Angie Harmon is back

Back in the series game with her July 12-debuting “Rizzoli & Isles,” Angie Harmon sounds…overwhelmed

“I have more of a family and I have apparently more of a workload than before,” says the former “Law & Order” and “Baywatch” actress between shots of her TNT femme crime fighter show with Sasha Alexander.  “It’s a blessing on both sides.  That’s good.  I’m learning to balance.  This past week, we discovered I can’t be in every scene and do 40-some pages of dialogue and have this work.”

As we speak, there are only four more episodes to shoot in the first order of 10 episodes of the series, and Angie’s hopes for the show are high — if she gets her workload under control.

The mother of six-year-old, five-year-old and one-year-old daughters with her husband, former NFL star Jason Sehorn, Harmon admits the show “came to me at a time when I was ready to retire, to pick up my girls and move away.  But then it landed on my front porch – a drama with an interesting character, on cable so I’d only be shooting five months of the year.  It was just what I’d prayed for.  And the person who was directing the pilot was at my wedding, a friend.  I really feel it was placed there for me by a higher hand.”

Early reviews are upbeat for the show, from Tess Gerritsen’s popular mystery novels.  In it, Harmon plays tomboyish Boston detective Jane Rizzoli and Alexander, formerly of “NCIS” is slightly eerie forensic medical examiner Maura Isles

Harmon has clearly taken a shine to her costar.  “Sasha comes over and she grabs me when she gets excited about something – like when we passed our third month mark working together.  She says, ‘It’s like we’re dating!’  I start laughing and say, ‘You’re really in my personal space and it’s freaking me out.’  She doesn’t. care.  She hangs on and on.  I really adore that woman.  Our families have vacationed together.  Our kids have gotten to know each other.”
